Sweating like a whore in church

Every once in a while someone asks me what I do at the gym or how they can get in shape. Here's the simple answer: cardio, weights, yoga, healthy food (maybe it's not healthy, but I avoid sugar and eat more protein).

One thing that really changed the way I work out is a heart monitor. If you do cardio without one, you're basically wasting your time. Polar makes a good one that retails for about $100, but I got mine on Ebay for $40. A trainer showed me that I didn't need to do cardio as intensely as I was to burn fat. I used to work out too hard and frequently got exhausted. After working out with the heart monitor, I lost about ten pounds.

A typical work out week for me:

Sunday: Weights about 60 mins. and/or cardio (45-75 mins.)

Monday: Same as Sunday

Tuesday: As long as I don't have a show, I do 45-60 minutes of cardio, then take an hour and half Ashtanga yoga class.

Wednesday: Abs, low back, cardio (45-75 mins.)

Thursday: Same as Tuesday.

Friday: Total body weights (45-75 mins.)

Saturday: Cardio (60-75 mins.)

Any time I don't have time to make it to the gym, I do Gabrielle Pelicci's Healthy Beautiful Sexy Kundalini Yoga dvd.

I don't work out every day. No one should. So I'll work out 3-6 days a week, depending on how crazy my schedule is.

When I do cardio, I mix it up. Example: I'll do 15 mins. on the stairmaster to warm up, 15 on the treadmill (running and walking in intervals), jump rope with a weighted jump rope 5-20 mins., and the stationary bike, eliptical. Mix it up to prevent boredom and injury. I need to clean up this pig sty before my brother visits, so I'm out of here. I'll put up some of my favorite exercises next blog. In the meantime, for motivation, inspiration, and information...
